About the game
In The Castles of Burgundy, players are influential aristocrats developing small princedoms in medieval France. Over five phases, build a prosperous estate by adding castles, buildings, ships, mines, animal pastures, and knowledge tiles to your personal player board. Trade goods along the river, gain silver, recruit workers, and choose the most efficient path to victory.
Each round, every player rolls two dice. Rather than simply relying on luck, players use those dice as action selectors: take a settlement tile from the central board, place a previously acquired tile into their estate, sell goods, gain worker tokens, or buy tiles using silverlings. Worker tokens allow players to adjust die values, giving them ways to adapt when the roll does not match their plan.
Every type of tile provides a different advantage. Castles grant an extra action, ships improve turn order and support goods delivery, mines generate silver, animals score based on matching groups, buildings offer immediate benefits, and knowledge tiles create ongoing or end-game scoring effects. Complete colored regions early for greater rewards, fill all spaces of a tile color for bonuses, and build combinations that make the most of each die result.
After five phases of five rounds each, players score remaining goods, money, workers, and end-game bonuses. The aristocrat with the most victory points wins. The Castles of Burgundy is a richly strategic Euro game that combines dice management, tile selection, estate building, efficient planning, and multiple scoring paths.
